What is an Invasive Plant Species?An "invasive species" is defined as a species that is Non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration; and, Whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.
KUDZU VINEThe Kudzu vine was introduced to the United States in 1876 by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Initially, this invasive species was used for both ornamental and ecological purposes; the vine planted alongside houses as decoration and as means of controlling soil erosion. However, this vine instead strangled and covered native plants and trees, often destroying branches from the sheer weight of the vine. Additionally, the Kudzu vine spreads very quickly; it grows about a foot a day by sending out runners. Due to it's tenacity, ecologists are limited to dealing with the Kudzu plant by either continuously mowing, employing grazing animals, or using herbicides to kill the plant.
